Mac OS 9 was the ninth major release of Apple's classic Mac OS operating system which was succeeded by OS X.Introduced on October 23, 1999, it was promoted by Apple as 'The Best Internet Operating System Ever', highlighting Sherlock 2's Internet search capabilities, integration with Apple's free online services known as iTools and improved Open Transport networking. MacOS 9.0 was released in October 1999 with the final update for it,version 9.2.2, release in December 2001. MacOS 9.2.2 is the last versionof MacOS based on the original Macintosh operating system.

The control strip, which was available for earlier versions of MacOShas been improved. You can now simply drag tiles onto the strip to installthem, instead of having to put them in 'Control Strip Modules.' You cannow also delete one by holding the Option key, then dragging it out.

Mac OS 9 can, optionally, have multiple users. Each user can have adifferent desktop theme and sound settings. Users can be given limitedpermissions so as to prevent them from messing up the Mac while still lettingthem use it.

With multiple users enabled the above login box appears at startup.Microsoft completely ripped off the appearance of this login window inWindows XP.

A very funky feature of MacOS 9 is that it can use your voiceprintas a password. You record a phrase and when you log in it does not justcheck the phrase but also that you are the one saying it.

Also on the subject of security, MacOS 9 adds the ability to encryptfiles on your hard drive.

In 9.0 - 9.0.4, most applications would install to the 'Applications'folder. 9.1 changed that, as it shipped at the same time, and along with,Mac OS X 10.0. 'Applications' is now used for OS X applications, and 'Applications(Mac OS 9) for OS 9 apps. It cannot be renamed to remove the (Mac OS 9).

MacOS 9 ships with Sherlock 2. You can use it to search your hard drive,as well as places on the internet. Google even has a plugin you can installthat allows Sherlock to search it.

This version of MacOS also ads a software update feature that can getsystem software and application updates from Apple over the internet. Youcan get updates manually or schedule a time to get updates automatically.

It also adds a network browser that enables you browse file servers,web servers and FTP servers.

Also on the subject of networking, MacOS 9 has an improved versionof AppleScript that can work remotely over TCP/IP with other Macintoshes.

Not that it is part of MacOS (thank goodness) but a web browser thatwas once popular for it was Microsoft Internet Explorer 5 for the Mac.Microsoft, however, has completely abandoned IE for the Mac. Thisversion will run on 9.x but actually can run on MacOS as far back as 8.1(on PPC only). There is also a MacOS X native version but Microsoft hasabandoned that version as well.

The last version of Mozilla that will Run on MacOS 9 is version 1.2.1.Unlike IE, however, Mozilla is still being actively developed for MacOSX.

This is the Quicktime 6 Player, MacOS 9.0 - 9.1 comes with Quicktime4, and 9.2.1 comes with Quicktime 5. Quicktime is used internally by MacOSfor many image, drawing, and sound operations.

These instructions are intended for machines that have had a PCI USB card installed after Mac OS installation has occurred, or one running 9.2 without built-in USB ports. The extensions that come with 9.2 have a bug, causing them to not work on Macs without built-in USB. The card and devices plugged into it will appear in System Profiler but will not function, and do not disappear until the machine is restarted.

In 9.1 you could also run the installer again, select Add/Remove, and add in USB Adapter Card Support. This is located in Mac OS 9.1>Network & Connectivity when doing a customized installation.

You will need

• A Macintosh with a working Mac OS 9.1 or 9.2 installation (See note 1 for prior versions)
• One PCI USB Card that's OHCI compliant, installed in the Mac. The vast majority of PCI USB 1.1/2.0 cards support OHCI.
  • Theoretically any OHCI-compliant card will work, but certain configurations are problematic (See note 2)
  • Note that a USB2.0 card will not work at 2.0 speeds as OS8/9 do not support EHCI
• Mac OS 9.1, either a retail CDROM or the 9.1 update

1. Insert your OS 9.1 disc or extract the 9.1 update and open the 'Installation Tome' file
   1. This is located in Software Installers/System Software/Mac OS 9.1
2. Extract these files from the tome, placing them on your desktop.
   1. HID Library
   2. Serial ShimLib
   3. USB Device Extension
   4. USB Mass Storage Support
   5. USB Software Locator
   6. USB Support
3. Skip to step 4 unless you're running 9.2. You'll need to remove the preinstalled versions of these files from your Extensions folder (in your System Folder.) Create a folder on your desktop and place them inside.
4. Drag the files you extracted onto the System Folder. You should receive a dialog box asking you to confirm placing them in the Extensions folder, click OK. Alternatively you can place the files directly in the Extensions folder.
5. Reboot. USB should now be working. You may trash the extensions you removed (if on 9.2)

1. Apple provided USB Adapter Card Support 1.4.1 as a separate installer for 8.6-9.0. You may still be able to use the versions extracted from 9.1, however.
2. All OHCI cards are supposed to work.
   1. I've had the best luck with NEC, Lucent, and OPTi-based cards. I'd stay away from VIA
   2. I could not get any USB 2.0 cards to function in a PowerMac 6500. I suspect this might have something to do with PCI 2.2, but I'm not sure. Please comment with your results.
